The state government of North Rhine-Westphalia is once again inviting entries for the "Family Municipality 2026" state prize. Municipalities in North Rhine-Westphalia can apply either with innovative individual projects or with comprehensive family policy concepts. Family-oriented intergenerational projects, the active involvement of children and parents in planning processes, family-friendly administration, flexible childcare and support services, prevention work and neighborhood work: many municipalities in North Rhine-Westphalia are increasingly gearing their actions towards the needs of families. Challenges are seen as opportunities, especially against the backdrop of a diverse everyday family life and demographic change.
In 2026, the state government will once again be awarding the "Family Municipality" state prize.
Under this motto, the state prize for family-friendly municipalities is being awarded for the third time. Families' lives are shaped locally. That is why the state government wants to highlight and recognize the commitment to family policy in the municipalities. Whether a large city, medium-sized town, small town or rural municipality - family friendliness can be experienced directly where you live.
Communities can apply with their overall family policy concepts or individual projects. This year, they can also submit priority projects on the topics of "Reconciling family, care and work" and "Combating child and family poverty". The "Family Municipality" state prize was awarded for the first time in 2024. With this award, the North Rhine-Westphalian state government recognizes the commitment of municipalities to family friendliness and helps to make innovative projects and good practice examples known throughout the state - as both inspiration and a blueprint.
